The Analog Waveguide is a versatile stereo resonator based on analog bucket brigade delay chips. The two delays combine and mix in a unique way to create harmonic and inharmonic resonances for a wide range of possible sounds, from mallet instruments, to metallic sounds, to string-like instruments and organic non-linear drones.
The Analog Waveguide is a versatile stereo resonator that feeds input signals into a rotation matrix. The matrix can be set to any angle. The Waveguide’s signal path is fully analog, and the delay lines are implemented with bucket brigade delays. The design was originally described in a theoretical paper by British mathematician Michael Gerzon (inventor of Ambisonics) in 1971, but was only finally implemented in 2011 by Miller Puckette (author of Max/MSP and Pure Data) but only in software. Our interpretation of the design re-implements and extends the original concept as a hardware Eurorack module with an all analog signal path. The resulting resonator is an analog waveguide capable of vivid physical modeling sound synthesis. The Waveguide’s integrated display shows the two delay line signals in a Cartesian coordinate system, visualizing the complex oscillating signal in the resonator. The wide range of displayed forms and movements are mesmerizing to watch and allow for a synaesthetic experience of the instrument. The visual representation of the signal also assists experienced users in remembering and recreating parameter settings for specific sounds.
